Exploring Door County WI

Door County Wisconsin is absolutely one of my favorite places in the state. There is always so much to do in every season that we find ourselves up there several times a year. About an hour north of Green Bay, Door County is easily accessible and worth the drive for anyone that loves outdoor activities, wineries and festivals, or even staying cozy in a beautiful Bed and Breakfast. There really is something for everyone. Although I cannot touch on everything in Door County worth mentioning, here are a few of my favorite things to do while visiting this amazing place.

Explore the State Parks

Door County has 5 state parks: Potawatomi, Peninsula, Whitefish Dunes, Newport, and Rock Island State Park. All of these parks have spots to hike and explore the outdoors and all but Whitefish Dunes have camping spots. Newport and Rock Island State Parks only have walk in sites while Potawatomi and Peninsula have several spots for tents or campers. All parks have a beach and Whitefish Dunes even has a dog beach! These parks offer so much to do and some even rent kayaks, paddleboards and other water equipment. These spots do fill up quickly so if you do decide to camp make sure you secure your site. While you visit these parks make sure you check out some trails. There are countless trails that lead to stunning views of the water and nature. Whitefish Dunes is also connected to Cave Point County Park which offers beautiful views of the bluffs and is a great spot to kayak around the caves.

Taste the Wineries

Door County is known for its incredible wineries. Scattered throughout the peninsula you are sure to find wine that you fall in love with. Some of my favorites include Red Oak Winery, located almost right when you come into Door County and is a wonderful first stop, Door 44 Winery, Stone’s Throw Winery, a very popular choice among visitors, and Door Peninsula Winery. All wineries offer different selections and atmospheres and some offer food. Feel free to take a self-guided tour or if you are so inclined sign up for a trolley tour! The trolley was a fun way for us to experience the wineries, enjoy a very delicious lunch and see Door County from a trolley.

Catch a Sunset

Door County is one of the best places to watch a sunset. There are so many beautiful places to take the time, sit down and watch the sun dip beneath the horizon. Peninsula State Park has many view points to be able to catch a sunset. If it is summer be sure to find a spot early as Peninsula is a popular place to watch a sunset in Door County. There are many marinas along the shore that provide stunning sunsets with the silhouettes from the boats in the background. In Fish Creek, Sunset Beach is another beautiful option. This is often busy as well so go early. Another favorite of mine is Ellison Bluff State Natural Area. This wasn’t too crowded when we went and offered a very bright red sunset. No matter where you decided to stop and take in the sunset in Door County you will be graced with magic.

Pick a Festival

There are so many fun and entertaining festivals in Door County it is hard to talk about them all. Festivals can range from kid friendly Pumpkin Patch Festival to an adult setting of Wine and Beer Festivals. Most festivals offer live music, food, kid-friendly stations, vendors and beverages. In winter, Sturgeon Bay offers an amazing Fire and Ice Festival where people come to carve sculptures out of blocks of ice and snow. It really is a unique experience. One of my favorite places that festivals are held is in Harbor View Park in Egg Harbor. There is a beautiful view of the water, shops to explore and the setting is perfect. If you are able to add one of these festivals to your calendar you will not be disappointed.

Door County truly is a wonderful place to visit. These are just a few of my favorite things to do in the area and there are so many more.
